Red River Cinnamon builds its business model around the production, sourcing, processing, and export of Vietnamese agricultural spices, with cinnamon as its flagship product. The company focuses on developing a value chain connected to raw material areas in Yen Bai – Lao Cai and Lang Son, while working directly with local farming households to ensure a stable supply and enhance the value of agricultural products from mountainous regions.

Connecting with Farmers – Building Sustainable Raw Material Areas

Red River works directly with farming households in its raw material areas, sourcing cinnamon bark, branches, leaves, and other raw materials to develop a diverse range of products, including cinnamon sticks, cinnamon tubes, cut cinnamon, cinnamon powder, and cinnamon essential oil.

This farmer-linked model helps create more stable market access and income opportunities for people in mountainous communities, while supporting the continued cultivation of perennial cinnamon forests. Cinnamon is an important crop for many highland communities and can contribute to soil coverage, water retention, and the maintenance of natural ecosystems.

Traceability and Value Chain Control

A key element of Red River’s business model is raw material control and batch-level traceability. From cultivation areas in Yen Bai to processing, packaging, and export, the company focuses on controlling raw material quality, moisture levels, impurities, and technical requirements specified by customers.

Controlling the chain from farm to processing, packaging, and export not only helps improve product quality and supply stability, but also provides a foundation for meeting the increasingly demanding requirements for transparency and traceability in international markets.

Adding Value and Optimizing Raw Materials

Rather than exporting only raw materials, Red River develops various processed products and specifications, including cinnamon tubes, cinnamon sticks, cinnamon powder, and cinnamon essential oil, meeting the diverse needs of international buyers.

Utilizing different parts of the cinnamon tree, such as bark, branches, and leaves, to develop different products creates opportunities to use raw materials more efficiently, reduce waste, and increase value throughout the supply chain.

This approach also provides potential for further development toward a circular economy model, such as using cinnamon by-products for essential oil distillation or converting them into biomass fuel and compost.

Bringing Vietnamese Spices into Global Supply Chains

Red River positions Red River - Vietnam Spices as a brand bringing Vietnamese-origin spices to global markets. Alongside cinnamon from Yen Bai - Lao Cai, the company also develops products such as star anise, ginger, turmeric, pepper, and other spices.

Its products are currently introduced to markets including South Korea, Taiwan, South Asia, the Middle East, the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, and other international markets.

At the Vietnam International Sourcing Expo, Red River’s booth attracted more than 150 visitors per day, including buyers from India, the Middle East, South Korea, Japan, and other markets. The company uses direct product experiences – allowing visitors to see, touch, smell, and experience the products – to communicate the distinctive characteristics of Vietnamese cinnamon.

Through this model, Red River is building a value chain that connects local farmers, Vietnamese raw materials, responsible sourcing, traceable processing, value-added products, and international markets.
